United States of America Country Report
Although the United States is a large country located mostly in North America, the state of Hawaii is made up of islands in the Pacific Ocean and has several overseas territories, including American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Porto. Rico and the US Virgin Islands are bordered by Canada and Mexico. Trade across these borders is over a billion dollars a day, contributing to the US economy’s status as one of the most developed countries in the world. Because of its size and geographic diversity, the United States also has significant natural resources.
Although the country’s politics are highly polarized, its political system has a long history of relative stability. In fact, its constitution is the oldest codified constitution that is still in force. Although civil unrest is not usually a major threat to domestic travelers, protests in the United States can sometimes turn violent, especially in major cities. Police shootings have sparked mass protests in the United States. These protests are usually concentrated near the scene of the shooting, but can spread across the country.
Although the crime rate in the United States is much lower than in many other countries in the Western Hemisphere, including most Latin American countries, it is still much higher than in similarly developed countries in Europe. The biggest threat to people visiting the United States comes from opportunistic crimes in major urban centers. Natural disasters such as hurricanes on the East Coast and Gulf of Mexico, earthquakes on the West Coast, and snowstorms across the northern part of the country are environmental hazards.
Several international terrorist organizations consider the United States to be the main enemy and a potential target for future attacks. Likewise, domestic extremist groups operate domestically, increasing the threat of terrorism in the United States.
