Portugal is a developed democratic country located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. Regular peaceful demonstrations and strikes are held in the country, especially over economic issues. The most common threat to tourists and migrants is street crime, although the level of violent crime is low. Portugal offers an open and welcoming environment for foreign investments and tourists. The risk of forest fires increases during hot and dry summer months. These can be fatal and cause extensive damage to land and property. Infrastructure is generally well-developed, although not in other Western European countries.

Portugal is a member of NATO, the European Union, and the Schengen area.

The biggest threat to foreign travelers is petty opportunistic theft, especially in large urban centers. Petty crime incidents increase during summer and winter tourist seasons. Riots occur regularly over various socio-economic and political issues. Protests are usually low-level and peaceful.

There are no major concerns regarding air travel to and within Portugal.

Road quality is generally good, but local driving standards can be inconsistent and traffic accidents are common.

Environment

Portugal is located in a seismic zone, and low-level earthquakes occur regularly but rarely cause damage or injury. Wildfires often occur during peak fire season from June to October and can cause property damage and loss of life. Occasionally, severe storms have been reported not only in mainland Portugal but also in the remote islands of the Azores and Madeira. When it rains heavily on the islands, flash floods can occur.

The most common illness associated with travel is traveler’s diarrhea. Portugal is well equipped with medical facilities and quality medical facilities are available in major cities. Facilities may be limited in rural areas. Most pharmacies are well stocked and some are open 24 hours a day. Tap water is safe to drink.

Political

Portugal is a unicameral, multi-party, semi-presidential and representative democratic republic. In the January 2022 general election, the ruling centre-left Socialist Party (PS) won an absolute majority. In this election, Antonio Costa was re-elected as Prime Minister. The political situation is stable and likely to remain stable for the next four years until the 2026 elections.
