Palau is located in the western Pacific Ocean and is an archipelago country with more than 340 islands. Although Palau’s economic activity is mainly related to tourism, subsistence farming, and fishing, a significant portion of the country’s gross national product comes from foreign aid. Most of the country’s economic activities are concentrated in Kurur, the commercial center. The archipelago’s security threats are generally benign, with most risks to foreigners arising from natural disasters and land travel.

Security

Palau has no major conflicts or terrorism threats. The level of criminal activity in the area is relatively low, although petty thefts such as pickpocketing and pickpocketing do occur. Violence in Palau is rare, with only a few isolated demonstrations in recent years. The demonstrations that do occur are usually peaceful.

Infrastructure

According to Palau’s aviation sector, there are no major safety concerns, as several major airlines operate regular flights to regional hubs.

The national road network is generally adequate on Koror, but much less developed on the other islands.

Electricity and communication infrastructure is generally good and a large part of the population is connected to the national electricity grid.

Environment

Palau has a tropical climate with two seasons: a dry season from December to April and a rainy season from April to December. The temperature range is 26 °C (78 °F) to 32 °C (90 °F).

Palau is subject to seasonal tropical storms and occasional typhoons, with the most severe weather occurring from June to November. These storm systems can cause significant damage or disruption to service. The islands are also located in areas of high seismic activity where moderate to severe earthquakes occasionally occur. The Pacific region is also at risk of tsunamis from large-scale offshore earthquakes. Unexploded ordnance from the World War II era exists on land and offshore, particularly on the islands of Peleliu and Angaur.

Health and Medical

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever and Zika fever are present in Palau and outbreaks have been reported from time to time. Medical facilities are limited but usually sufficient for basic and routine medical procedures. However, more serious injuries or conditions may require medical evacuation. Common over-the-counter and prescription medications are readily available but may be difficult to obtain in some remote areas.

Political

Palau is generally a stable democracy with frequent and peaceful transfers of power since the 1990s. However, corruption remains a problem in the country, especially in the public sector. In general, the rule of law in Palau is considered adequate.
