At least six killed in drone strike on SDF training base in Syria We are getting reports that a drone struck a Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) facility overnight killing at least 6 of its members. Sources told Al Jazeera the target was a training base in Syria’s Deir Az Zor province, and the drone hit a dormitory. US forces are also stationed at the training base. Reuters news agency also reported the incident, citing two local sources who say the drone had come from an area where Iranian-backed proxies are active and regularly launch strikes. ISLAMABAD: At least 93 militant attacks across the country took place in the last one month (January 2024), killing 90 persons and causing 135 injuries. Also 15 individuals were abducted. The alarming statistics have been released by the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), an Islamabad-based think tank here on Thursday. As Pakistan gears up for the impending general elections, the first month of the year has witnessed a disconcerting surge in militant activities, with a staggering 102 percent increase compared to the last month of 2023. The statistics indicated that despite the rise in attacks, the impact on human losses was somewhat mitigated. A 15 percent increase in resultant deaths and a 19 percent rise in injuries were reported. Among those killed, the victims included 41 civilians, 37 security forces personnel and 12 militants. The injured comprised 81 civilians and 54 security forces personnel. The PICSS says the province of Balochistan bore the brunt of the onslaught, with 33 reported attacks leading to 31 deaths and 50 injuries. Mainland Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) experienced 30 attacks, resulting in 17 fatalities and 21 injuries. Former Fata (the newly-merged districts of KP) witnessed 24 attacks, claiming 36 lives and injuries to 57. Sindh faced four militant attacks, causing five deaths and six injuries. Punjab and Islamabad each reported a solitary attack with no significant casualties. As the electoral landscape heats up, attacks against election-related activities, including the targeting of candidates, have surged. The PICSS recorded 21 such attacks in January, claiming 10 lives and injuries to 25. Notably, two candidates lost their lives – Rehan Zeb Khan, a prominent youth leader and a local leader from Bajaur, and an independent candidate from Mir Ali in North Waziristan. Several candidates narrowly escaped harm in these attacks. A truck loaded with gas exploded and set off a massive fireball that burned homes and warehouses in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, killing at least three people and injuring more than 200. Russian assets frozen in European accounts are generating billions of dollars in interest payments that could be diverted to help repair Ukraine’s war-torn economy — and the European Union just took a step closer to doing that. After Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Western countries froze nearly half of Moscow’s foreign reserves — some €300 billion ($327 billion). Around €200 billion ($218 billion) sits in the European Union — mostly at Euroclear, a financial institution that keeps assets safe for banks, exchanges and investors. EU leaders agreed a crucial $50 billion funding package for Ukraine on Thursday and came closer to finalizing a plan to use the profits piling up in Euroclear’s accounts. In a statement issued at the end of a summit, EU leaders said “potential revenues could be generated … concerning the use of extraordinary revenues held by private entities stemming directly from the immobilised Central Bank of Russia assets.” Belgium-based Euroclear disclosed Thursday that it has earned €5.2 billion ($5.6 billion) in interest on income generated by sanctioned Russian assets since they were frozen by EU and Group of Seven countries in 2022. “The number of sanctions and countersanctions that have been introduced since February 2022 are unprecedented and continue to have a significant impact on the daily operations of Euroclear,” the group said in a statement. The European Union and its allies are determined to make Russia foot part of the colossal bill for rebuilding Ukraine — estimated by the World Bank a year ago at $411 billion over the next decade. At least one person was killed and four others were injured on Thursday after several blasts hit different parts of Balochistan including provincial capital Quetta, according to police. In Quetta, the explosion took place in the Spinny Road area. Police have cordoned off the area and are ascertaining the nature of the blast, Geo News reported. The explosions also took place in Naseerabad and Turbat districts of the province. According to police, at least three people were injured when a hand grenade exploded at the Dera Allah Yar Bhatti gate area in Naseerabad and one person was injured in a grenade blast in Turbat’s main market. Bomb disposal squad and rescue teams have arrived at the site of a blast in Quetta where, according to police, at least one person has died in the explosion. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Quetta Tariq Jawad told the media that 8 to 10 kg of explosives were used in the blast in the provincial capital. He said the deceased of the blast has not been identified yet, adding the preliminary investigation showed the victim was a passer-by. Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been sentenced to 14 years in jail for illegally selling state gifts. The sentencing comes a day after Khan was given a 10-year prison term in a case related to the leaking of state secrets. The double sentencing against Pakistan’s popular politician comes about a week before the national elections on February 8. Khan is barred from running in the vote as his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party witnesses a massive crackdown by the state. More reactions to the sentencing Lawyer Rida Hosain says the haste in which Khan’s back-to-back convictions were announced is explicable. “The right to a fair trial lies at the heart of any civilised society governed by the rule of law. Even those accused of the harshest of crimes must get a fair process. It is blatant that there was no fair process in this case,” she told Al Jazeera. However, ex-Attorney General Ashtar Ausaf Ali said the PTI’s legal team was given ample opportunity to present its arguments. “They failed to rebut or impeach the prosecution’s case,” he said. The party was scheduled to hold a general meeting at the premises in preparation for the upcoming elections. “Tehreek-e-Insaaf is being prevented from meeting even inside its office. PTI official Syed Zulfiqar Bukhari has told Al Jazeera the sentencing of the opposition leader was “yet another sad day in Pakistan’s judicial history” that showed that the “judiciary is being dismantled. He described the ruling as “flawed” and “ridiculous” that “witnesses clearly seemed compromised”. “Star witnesses were changed … with no cross-questioning allowed, no final argument concluded, and the decision pops up like a predetermined process in play,” Bukhari said. Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Khan, commonly known as Bushra Bibi, gave herself up for arrest shortly after the verdict, reports said. Bibi, who has also been sentenced to 14 years in jail with Khan, is known for her spirituality and devotion to Sufism, a mystical form of Islam. Born Bushra Riaz Watto, she changed her last name to Khan after her marriage in 2018. Her husband and followers commonly refer to her as Bushra Bibi or Bushra Begum, titles that in Urdu denote respect. She has kept a low profile since her marriage to Khan, a former cricket hero who has been in the public eye for decades.
