Security

Belarus does not face any direct external threats. As of early February 2022, Russian forces have been deployed in Belarus as part of a troop surge that will be used to attack Russian forces in Ukraine. Minsk does not send troops to Ukraine, choosing instead to provide logistical support to Russian forces, allowing Moscow to use various training ranges and air bases. Belarusian troops are currently stationed in southern Ukraine, ostensibly to protect the country from potential Ukrainian saboteurs and illegal armed groups.
Relations between Belarus and the European Union have deteriorated since the border crisis in 2021-2022. Belarusian border authorities have forced thousands of migrants, mostly from the Middle East, to cross the EU border illegally. The crisis is seen as an attempt to destabilize neighboring EU countries, especially Poland and Lithuania. The border crisis has caused major disruptions in the transport of goods between Belarus, Russia and the European Union, increasing waiting times at border crossings and thus increasing transport costs.
Belarus faces increasing cyber threats from organized underground groups such as the Belarusian Cyber ​​Guerrillas, which leak information about Belarusian security services, leak sensitive information and engage in transport disruption incidents.
Terrorist risk is low and no significant regional or transnational terrorist groups operate in this country. Safety risks from criminal activities are low. Travelers are targeted because they display signs of wealth, such as expensive cars, jewelry, and clothing. Petty theft, such as robbery and pickpocketing, is relatively rare in areas frequented by foreign tourists. On rare occasions, protests and rallies are held in urban centers such as Minsk, but are usually dispersed by force by law enforcement.
