RAWALPINDI: In an intelligence-based operation (IBO), security forces have wiped out five terrorists in the Mir Ali area, North Waziristan, the military’s media wing said on Saturday. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), a terrorist commander was also included in the slain militants who were “sent to hell”. It said security forces conducted the IBO on December 29, 2023, on the reported presence of terrorists. “During the conduct of the operation, after intense fire exchange, five terrorists, including Terrorist Commander Rahzaib aka Khuray, were sent to hell. The killed terrorists remained actively involved in numerous terrorist activities against security forces as well as extortion and target killings of innocent civilians. Weapons and ammunition were also recovered during the operation,” the ISPR said. At least 14 people, including two children, have been killed and 108 injured following a Ukrainian attack on the centre of the Russian provincial capital of Belgorod, the Russian Emergencies Ministry has said. Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said on Saturday that the attack on Belgorod, about 30km (19 miles) from the border with Ukraine, had hit a residential area. RAWALPINDI: Pakistan conducted a successful test flight of the multi-launch rocket Fatah-II, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said Wednesday. The Fatah-II weapon system is equipped with state-of-the-art avionics, a sophisticated navigation system, and a unique flight trajectory. It is capable of engaging targets with high precision up to a range of 400 kilometres, added the military’s media wing. The test was witnessed by senior officers from tri-services and dedicated scientists and engineers. President Arif Alvi, Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir congratulated participating troops and scientists on the successful conduct of flight test. Russia has launched the biggest air attack on Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the Ukrainian military told CNN, with an unprecedented number of drones and missiles fired at targets across the country, killing at least 12 people and injuring dozens more. The wave of attacks began overnight into Friday and struck nationwide, with blasts reported in the capital Kyiv, as well as at a maternity hospital in the central city of Dnipro, the eastern city of Kharkiv, the southeastern port of Odesa, and the western city of Lviv, far from the frontlines. “It’s been a long time since we have seen so many enemy targets on our monitors in all regions and all directions,” Yurii Ihnat, spokesperson for Ukraine’s air force, told national television. “Everything was being fired.” Russia used 158 drones and missiles, including hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, cruise missiles and Shahed drones, to strike targets in Kyiv, the east, south and west of the country, Ukraine’s air force said. “Today the enemy has struck a powerful blow. There are downed targets, however unfortunately there are also casualties,” Ihnat added. French police on Tuesday arrested a man suspected of killing his wife and four children in a scene of “very great violence” on Christmas Day in Paris, according to authorities. Police forced their way into an apartment on Christmas Day and found the bodies of a woman, a baby and three other children aged up to 10, the public prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier said at a press conference on Tuesday. The younger children, both boys, had no knife wounds but looked as though they had been suffocated or drowned. The mother and her two older children, both girls, had been stabbed multiple times, The Guardian reported. The arrested man, who is reported by local media to be the woman’s husband and father of the children, was seen on a security camera footage leaving the apartment at Meaux in the Île-de-France region east of Paris. Meanwhile, a formal investigation has been launched into the incident on two charges, each carrying a life sentence if proven: the “deliberate killing” of youngsters under the age of 15 and the “deliberate killing” of a partner. Bladier said police found a scene with blood everywhere when they broke into the flat on Monday evening after being alerted by a neighbour who was a close friend of the mother, aged 35. None of the victims have been named and Bladier said it would be illegal to publish anything that could identify the children, who were aged 10, seven, four and nine months. According to medical documents found at the apartment, the suspect, aged 33, a qualified plumber of French nationality, suffered from depression and psychological problems. In November 2019, the man was arrested for allegedly stabbing the woman six weeks before their third child’s birth. The woman declined pressing charges and help from victim support organisations, leading to the case being dropped due to his frail mental state. Bladier said the woman told police in 2019 that she and her partner had met in school as teenagers and had been together for 14 years, before getting married in October this year. Pakistan-bound container ship from Saudi Arabia came under attack in the Red Sea, with Yemen’s Houthi militia claiming responsibility for targeting the vessel. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has confirmed that one of its container ships was attacked on Tuesday while transiting the southern Red Sea, according to TradeWinds. The Liberia-flagged ship was en route from King Abdullah Port, Saudi Arabia to Karachi, Pakistan. “Currently, all crew are safe with no reported injuries and a thorough assessment of the vessel is being conducted”, the shipping company said in a statement. It added that the company’s priority “remains protecting the lives and safety of our seafarers, and until their safety can be ensured, MSC will continue to reroute vessels booked for Suez transit via the Cape of Good Hope”. MSC said the ship notified a nearby coalition task force warship of the attack and engaged in ‘evasive manoeuvres’. In a statement, Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree said: “The naval forces of the Yemeni Armed Forces carried out a targeting operation against the commercial ship, ‘MSC United’ with appropriate naval missiles.” “The targeting operation of the ship came after the crew refused, for the third time, calls from the naval forces, as well as repeated fiery warning messages”, the Houthi statement added. The development came as US military forces shot down more than a dozen attack drones and several missiles fired by Yemen-based Houthi rebels at shipping in the Red Sea, the Pentagon said on Tuesday. “There was no damage to ships in the area or reported injuries,” the Pentagon´s Central Command said in a social media post, describing a barrage of 12 drones, three anti-ship ballistic missiles and two land-attack missiles over a period of 10 hours. Earlier, Huthi rebels claimed responsibility for a missile strike on a vessel in the Red Sea and a drone attack toward Israel in solidarity with Gaza. In a statement, the rebels said they “carried out a targeting operation against a commercial ship” they identified as MSC UNITED, and launched a number of “drones against military targets” in southern Israel. The attacks are the latest in a flurry of drone and missile strikes launched by the rebels since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7.
