The Netherlands is a stable democracy in Northern Europe, bordering the North Sea to the north and west, Germany to the east, and Belgium to the south. Several international organizations, including the offices of the European Union and the United Nations, operate in the Netherlands. The government is stable and there are no major threats to stability. The Dutch economy is highly developed, making it one of the most prosperous countries in the world. The country maintains generous policies for foreign direct investment and trade and follows OECD investment regulations. Corruption is rare in the Netherlands. Protests and rallies are frequent but rarely turn violent or target foreign companies. There are no significant security threats to foreign travelers. However, petty crimes are also occurring and concerns about Islamic extremism are growing. Dutch authorities have stepped up counter-terrorism measures amid growing concerns about a possible Islamic State (ISIS) plot. Medical, communication, and transportation infrastructures are widely developed throughout the country.

Security
The Netherlands is generally considered a safe place to travel. Although petty crime is the biggest threat to foreign tourists, its incidence is relatively low by local standards. Violent crime is rare and does not usually affect foreign nationals. This country does not face the danger of internal or external conflict. Terrorism is a potential threat and concerns are heightened by the presence of Islamic extremist networks linked to transnational groups.

Political
The Netherlands is a federal, multiparty, parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy. The prime minister is the head of the government and the king is the head of the government. While the king, prime minister and cabinet collectively exercise executive power, legislative power is vested in the state legislature (Parliament), which consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The judiciary is independent from the executive and legislative branches. Presidential and parliamentary elections are held at least once every four years.
Government formation usually requires a coalition of different political parties. Government collapses happen from time to time. Government agencies are competent and effective and provide reliable services throughout the country.
