Jamaica Country Report
Jamaica has long been one of the Caribbean’s tourism hubs, but the country has faced persistent security problems due to drug trafficking and the infiltration of organized crime. Although the island’s political situation is stable, the transition of power may be undermined by election-related violence. Opportunistic crime is most likely to affect tourists, but violent crime, armed robbery, and kidnapping are also a threat. Demonstrations sometimes occur and are usually peaceful, but violence can occur with or without warning.
Corruption is a concern not only in the police but also in the executive and legislative branches. Road conditions are often poor and local driving habits can be erratic. Powerful storm systems during hurricane season can cause flash floods and landslides. Looting becomes a problem after major storms. From a public health infrastructure perspective, health services outside of Kingston and Montego Bay are very limited.

Security
There are no conflicts that would cause significant concern to foreign tourists, and there are no terrorist threats that could adversely affect national security. However, the crime rate is high. Travelers are most at risk of petty crime, but some foreigners are also victims of violent crime. Protests and strikes may occur from time to time and may turn violent and cause disruption.

Infrastructure
There are no major safety concerns with air travel. However, land travel can be dangerous due to several threats such as poor road conditions and criminal activities.
Power outages happen occasionally and can affect large areas of the country.
Cell phone coverage and Internet connectivity are generally reliable in most urban centers, although cybercrime is not yet a major concern.

Environment
During hurricane season, Jamaica has a moderate to high probability of strong hurricanes, which pose significant risks to human communities and infrastructure, and potentially disrupt travel and service delivery. Hurricane season typically runs from June to November, with peak activity increasing in September.
The country is also vulnerable to earthquakes of varying strength, while its coasts are prone to tsunamis that occur following strong offshore earthquakes. Disaster prevention measures seem to be insufficient.
