Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke to US President Joe Biden on Sunday to inform him about the mandate he had given the Israeli negotiating team, which is in the Qatari capital, for talks on a ceasefire and captives release deal.The Israeli team is expected to stay at least another day in Doha in order to hammer out final details for a potential deal.Biden stressed that now is the time for a ceasefire, something he’s been saying for more than a year. The Israelis have largely blamed Hamas for why this has failed, while Hamas has pointed the finger at the Israelis.Meanwhile, internally within Israel, there is a lot of disagreement about a potential ceasefire deal. Members of the far-right have said they would vote against it and Netanyahu even spoke to some of them, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, to try to warm them up to the idea of a deal.There is a school of thought in Israel that Netanyahu has prolonged the war and not agreed to a deal because he fears it could result in the collapse of his government.Nonetheless, these talks are still ongoing as mediators scramble to get a deal.
- Israel launches ‘large bombing operation’ in southern LebanonThe Lebanese National News Agency (NNA) is reporting that Israeli forces carried out a “large bombing operation” in the southern town of Kfar Kila in the early hours of the morning, causing tremors in the surrounding towns.It said Israeli forces are also carrying out a wide combing operation with heavy and medium machineguns in the southern town of Khiam.The latest attacks follow Israeli air raids overnight on the outskirts of Janta in the eastern Baalbek region as well as areas near southern Nabatieh.Earlier, the Israeli military said it had struck several Hezbollah sites, including a rocket launcher, and “routes along the Syria-Lebanon border used to smuggle weapons to Hezbollah”.The attacks come just two weeks before the January 26 deadline for implementing the November ceasefire, which both sides have accused the other of violating.
