- At least 37,925 people have been killed and 87,141 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7. The death toll in Israel from the Hamas-led attacks is estimated at 1,139 with dozens of people still held captive in Gaza.
- Update on people trapped in Gaza City’s Shujayea neighbourhoodThe UNRWA planning director, Sam Rose, also gave an update on the situation in Gaza City’s Shujayea neighbourhood where civilians are trapped by ongoing intense battle between Palestinian fighters and Israeli forces. He said that those trapped did not follow the previous Israeli evacuation order because they are either too old, sick or unwilling to move because “they had enough and prefer to die where they are rather than face another round of uncertainty”, he said.“The expectation when it started was that this would be over quite quickly but it’s carrying on – we are now I believe in day six,” he added.
- Israel’s evacuation order means ‘yet another chapter of misery’ for people of Gaza: UNRWASam Rose, the planning director of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), has said that most of the 250,000 Palestinians affected by the latest Israeli evacuation order had already been displaced several times. He told Al Jazeera from the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza that the Israeli order to leave eastern areas of Gaza’s second-largest city, Khan Younis, left people in “just harrowing, horrific and incredibly difficult” situation.“It means yet another day, week, chapter of misery for these hundreds of thousands of people … most of them have been displaced several times. Some had just returned from Rafah where they were displaced a few weeks ago,” Rose said.“They ought to go west, to al-Mawasi – the beachy, sandy area on the coast, but it’s already so overcrowded. There is no room to pitch a tent, there is no water, no infrastructure, no sanitary services. Many spend the night in vehicles or they sleep on their donkey charts,” he said.“They go without knowing precisely where they will end up because this evacuation order told people to go urgently – they know that if they don’t go out within 24 hours the worst is to come.”
- Lieberman protests against Israel’s resumption of electricity to Gaza water plantWe have reported earlier that Israel had resumed supplying electricity to Gaza’s desalination plant, prompting some angry reaction from some Israeli politicians.Avigdor Lieberman, the leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, is among them.He said Israel continues to supply Gaza with electricity, water, fuel and goods “contrary to all common sense”, although the captives are still being held there.“The time has come to put an end to these omissions and disengage from Gaza completely,” he wrote on X.
- Only three patients left in Khan Younis European Hospital: WHORik Peeperkorn, the World Health Organization’s representative for the occupied Palestinian territory, says the European Hospital in Khan Younis is virtually empty with staff and patients fleeing the facility after Israel’s latest evacuation order.“The hospital staff and the patients decided to already evacuate themselves,” Peeperkorn said, adding that just three patients remained.“We plea the European Gaza hospital will be spared, will be non-damaged,” he told a UN press briefing, speaking by videolink from Jerusalem.
